Is something happening tomorrow?

NewYearsEve

Ok before I start let me just say I am rocking this whole one eye on the screen, one eye on the TV thing. This laptop is the dogs wotsits! Ok now that’s out of the way, I shall begin….

Is there something happening tomorrow? Is it a special day? There are lots of little New Year posts appearing in my reader, yet the big day is not till tomorrow. Anyone would think you guys are going to be heading out or something.

Up until my injury I always worked. New Years Eve has to be one of the loneliest nights of the calendar to work in a profession where the only contact you have with the outside world is by telephone. Strangely I didn’t mind, I had after all a job to do. Everything would go crazy until about 11.30pm and then things would calm a little as midnight approached. All the drivers would go home to spend time with their families and come the stroke of midnight I would go outside and stand at the front door of the office and listen for the boats sounding their horns as the clock struck 12. Back inside and after a quick call with the folks at approximately 12.15 the phones would start to ring off the hook and it would stay that way sometimes until 5 or 6 am.

On New Years Even it’s inevitable that taxies run late. That mate you promised a lift home, well I hadn’t actually allocated any time for him, so you make me late for the person after you, and so it goes on. When being shouted, moaned and whinged at, I had to sometimes and not always politely remind people that this was also my New Years yet I had given it up to make sure they got home safe.

It’s not that I am opposed to going out by the way, no I am not opposed to it at all, I just don’t like it, so umm no, not opposed.  Ok if truth be told it’s a direct result from trying and failing so many times to date men of the Scottish variety. Old Lang Syne still manages to reduce me to tears at any good New Year shindig I attend, so best to avoid them. (Disclaimer: For entertainment purposes only, I can assure my Scottish exes my heart healed just fine.)

Last year without a doubt was the best New Year ever. Owing to the fact that I was still recovering from my injury and there was no chance I was going to be getting down and dirty on the dance floor, or in work for that matter, I spent it with friends on  the Xbox. We had such a laugh, mostly due to the fact that our friend Jelly likes a wee toot of Whiskey and decided to have one or two that night. Many times I laughed till I cried.

It will be hard to top that, although if everyone is around perhaps we can try to recreate the magic. Whatever happens I’ll not be too far travelled on New Years Eve and will no doubt stop by to wish you all a happy and safe one, whatever it is you choose to do.

P.S – It took me so long to TV Watch / Write the post that it’s now New Years Eve, so for the sake of continuity just pretend it isn’t! Thanks :)

The holiday is over!

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” ― Edith Lovejoy Pierce

I did it, tonight I watched the last episode of Greek. On both Friday and Saturday night I wrapped myself in my new fleece Geek blanket and had little mini TV marathons. By today I had left myself with just one little episode to watch. I was going to save it until New Years Eve, but I just couldn’t wait. All along I had been watching it thinking that there were more series and it was only a matter of time until they would appear. Imagine how sad I was when I consulted IMDB and realised that the episode I had just watched was the last one ever.

It left me with a dilemma, what to watch next. I like the idea of the program Dracula that is currently playing on one of the Sky channels. It’s not so much that I like men with pointy teeth and high collars, it’s more to do with the fact that I like lusting after Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I’d seen an introductory offer for Now TV which would give me the ability to watch the entertainment channels both live and on demand for £4.99 a month. I figured what’s to lose, if worst comes to worst then at least I can watch Dracula. Wrong! Only the last two episodes are on there and looking through the catalogue there is not that much else I would want to watch. Needless to say it’s getting cancelled at the end of the first month, but not before I watch Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew, because he is quite pleasing on the eye too, whilst teaching ordinary people to street dance.

Tomorrow it’s time to return to work and as sad as I am, I am also a little bit glad. I’ve been thinking 5 days is a little to long in the pressure cooker that can sometimes be my home life. That said I am looking forward to getting another day off on Wednesday.

There are still a couple of days left over which I can ponder my New Years Resolutions if indeed I choose to buckle and make some.  I’ll not get too stressed about it, I’ll just try and get through work and to the end of 2013.

The quote says it all really, for all of us who write, we have clean fresh pages and the choice is ours as to what we fill them with.

The countdown begins………..

Feeling Meh-ry, not Merry!

I don’t know what it is, but now Christmas has departed I am feeling a little on the meh side. Instead of revelling in the post Christmas delights of over eating and the Wizard of Oz, I am instead nursing a rather grand case of post Christmas blues.

In some ways this was not the relaxing break I had hoped for. I forgot that although I had a few days off work, things at home would be the same meaning the cooking and  the cleaning would carry on. So sadly do Mums mood swings. I try to stay calm, but sometimes it proves really difficult. I also remind myself daily to not take it personally, but that can also prove difficult.

Perhaps that’s the cause of some of the mehness. Most people look forward to the New Year and the chance to hypothetically start over with a clean sheet, while making promises to not make the same mistakes as the previous year. I’m a little bummed out because in the near future  it looks like the only thing in my future is more of the same. We’re sort of at a crossroads, where the situation is getting worse, but not to the stage where we can seek outside help. My Dad says not to worry and that things have a strange way of working out, but asking me not to worry is like asking me not to breathe, That is something else I intend to address in the New Year.

I still find it uncomfortable to write things like this on my blog, and despite how many times I tell myself I can write what I want, it’s a hurdle I stumble, not leap over. Couple that with yesterday having a crisis of confidence (yes again) and bemoaning the fact that I don’t feel like I write like an adult I was ready to throw in the towel and admit defeat. Unfortunately, for you that is, it only lasted a short period of time, so I’m not going anywhere any time soon, sorry to disappoint!

In the mean time I am going to do the housework and give myself a serious talking to. I would do it in a dark room but the daytime scuppered that idea.

Merry Meh-ness people, tomorrow (or even later on) is another day!

It’s 363 Days till Christmas!

Santa Sprouts
Santa Sprouts!

It’s kind of hard to believe that it’s all over for another year. The build up seems to take forever. We begin planning from the start of December, or for some even before and then it arrives and if you blink you miss it.

My Sister and I managed just fine with the cooking, well no one died, so thats got to be a result right? I had my brussel sprouts (thank you for asking Audrey Dawn lol) The effects were not too catastrophic, well until later in the evening that is, when I donned the penguin onesie given to me by Udders. After a brief spell of high winds I pretty much looked like this:

Fart in a Wetsuit
Never fart in a Onsie!

I did get lots of  lovely goodies though, including some other penguin things. I was delighted with everything. Hey as long as there are sweets and stationary I am a happy camper. Add in a Geek fleece blanket and some new sketch pads and it’s a match made in heaven!

I’m not however loving the weather we are having just now. Tonight has been high winds and heavy rain. I keep thinking at any moment the roof is going to blow off leaving me seeing stars, quite literally! I suppose it’s to be expected. Think about the sheer volume of sprouts consumed over the festive period, all that extra gas has to go somewhere. Thing is though, we’ve had these high winds for a while now, so could you all try and point your arses in a different direction to see if it makes any difference.

Oooo that reminds me, there was more good news as well…..wait for it…..I reached 200 followers!! I would show you the little badge only WordPress hasn’t given me one yet, perhaps I have to get 201 for that to happen. I know it’s a little confusing because my side bar says 280, but that’s the figure including Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you to those who pushed me into the path of their followers (yeah that means you Strawberry Quick Sand), reblogged me, bigged me up, and in a nut shell got me the additional followers I needed to reach my goal! It’s possibly the first time I have ever reached a personal target in my life, well apart from trying to make myself float in a penguin onesie that is.

I hope you all had an enjoyable and Happy Christmas. There are only a few days left until the start of 2014, and I very much look forward to seeing you all on the other side!

It’s getting close…

Happy Christmas

The turkey has been picked up and is chilling in it’s little plastic onsie in the fridge! The vegetables arrive tomorrow for the short stay at our house before they disappear into my tummy. Only one more day at work and then there is not having to worry about it for another five days. Anyone would think it was Christmas. Oh wait it is……

I have to be honest and say I am not a big Christmas lover, I think I may have mentioned that before. Occasionally though I do get overcome with the spirit of it all, and burst into random renditions of Christmas carols. I also have a fondness for festive TV, and may in fact watch the Wizard of Oz for the 100th time. I’ll counter and possibly win discussions by starting off with ‘But it’s Christmas…’ and there is no doubt that I will eat way to much and promise that I will never do so again.

I’m really looking forward to a few days off, a chance to relax and unwind, catch up on some blog reading and perhaps, if you are really unlucky, I might even write a few posts of my own. I’ve missed so many great posts lately, but life has been a little more hectic than usual.

We have weather warnings in place for high winds over the next couple of days so I hope the electricity stays on. I would hate to spend  my 5 days off suffering from Brussel Sprout withdrawal symptoms.

Chances are I will be back before the big day, but should I not be, I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas. I am so grateful for the support I have received from you all, right down to each and every like and comment! It’s been humbling and overwhelming.

Who would have thought at the start of 2013 that I would meet a bunch of wonderful eejits like you!

Merry Christmas, I hope it’s a good one!

Ah darn….how many days left!

LoveFilm logo with_extended_box

I seem to have this unbelievable knack of starting to watch a series, and falling in love with it (on Lovefilm that is), just as they are about to pull it from the catalogue.

I rarely get time to watch films, but I like series’s as with the removal of adverts each episode is a tidy little 40 minutes.

I have managed to pack in a great many episodes in a short space of time recently. There was all nine series of Greys Anatomy, it was so good and the cause of many middle of the nighters!

Then there was Haven, another great show. It sometimes got a little predictable in the middle, but had this great knack of hooking you in at the end of each episode, meaning I had to watch just one more, for, umm all three series.

Currently it’s Greek. Of course I picked it out of the ‘Last Chance’ folder. I’m stupid like that. Of course I also started to watch it without checking to see how long was left. Sod’s law I am enjoying it immensely and now have only 10 days left in which to watch the last 3 series. Thank goodness for Christmas, it’s going to be a bit of a life saver and hopefully allow me to finish before the finish, if you catch my drift!

Wish me luck, I am diving in head first! I suppose instead of my usual getting my ‘geek’ on, this Christmas I’ll be getting my ‘Greek’ on.

It might be random but..

IE News Banner

Ok so earlier I did a post and said I wanted five more follows so I could reach my dream of 200. I did get three more, thank you very much new followers, but more random than that, I got a new little notification of an award:

likeable-blog-1337-1x

It’s kind of a random number right? Although I am not complaining about the likes, thank you everyone! After Googling this little conundrum I was glad to note that others were as confused as I upon receiving this award.

Leet (or “1337“), also known as eleet or leetspeak, is an alternative alphabetfor the English languagethat is used primarily on the Internet. It uses various combinations of ASCIIcharacters to replace Latinateletters. For example, leet spellings of the word leet include 1337 andl33teleet may be spelled 31337 or 3l33t.

The term leet is derived from the word elite

So there you have it, in simple terms, WordPress have a damn fine sense of humour!

In Other News!

Hot off the press, the latest edition of the Okay, What If Challenge has been released and this week there is a definite Christmas feel.

Writing challenge. What if you could rewrite your favorite Christmas song?

I mean who hasn’t wanted to do that at some stage, in fact I am sure some of us already have while under the guise of the demon drink. If you would like to participate in the challenge, then click the link for more information.

Secondly, it’s Monday! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news to anyone who had not realised. Monday’s suck, of that there is no doubt, but it’s not all doom and gloom because it’s also the day that Steve from Steve says issues the weeks Monday (funnily enough) Music Challenge. If you are not sure you’re on the right path, or which direction you should take, let the mystic music guide you, so far its been freakishly accurate, well for me anyways. For more information click here.

Last, but not least we have Rob, from Robs Surf Report, and his Haiku Challenge, which this month has the theme of Epic Fantasy. It certainly makes you think. I found my first foray challenging but entertaining. For more information, click here.

And on that note I shall leave you with a Christmas advertisement for the present I want from Kris Kringle, none other than Santa Claus himself, a Buffalo Tom Peabody Plunger, something no home should be without. Head here to order!

Till next time!

Here comes 2014!

When the mad rush of Christmas is all over and we lie around in our chairs unable to move due to the fact that we are stuffed to the gills with turkey and the brussel sprouts have not yet started to work their magic, thoughts will start to turn to the New Year and the hopes and dreams we wish for, neatly sold as resolutions.

When I kept diaries, every year I would faithfully write my wishes for the year ahead, everything I was going to do, achieve and how I was going to change and better myself. Unbeknownst to me, until I read them all back one after the other, was that they were all the same. Every year I was wishing and hoping for the same things and nothing was changing.

So this year, I’m not going to hope for anything or make any kind of wishes, I’m just going to go with the flow and see what happens. I’m not going to wish away my anxiety and worry, instead I am going to keep an eye on them and if things don’t improve I am going to seek outside assistance in the form of some kind of medication.

I’m going to lose weight, if for nothing else, but the sake of my knees. I’ve been back to work almost a year since my accident and whilst I am much improved I am also beginning to realise that I am never going to be the same, so any assistance I can give my ailing joints will I am sure, be appreciated.

My before the end of year goal is actually relatively simple, I want to reach 200 followers on this blog. Now I know you will look and say but you have over that now, and yes I do, however if you take Facebook and Twitter out of the equation I don’t. I’d like to earn my little 200 followers badge, I only need 5 more people and I’m happy.

I love blogging, I’ve met some amazing people, tried things I never thought I would, written things I still can’t believe I did, and I’ve even researched and written a Haiku, and lets not forget the fact that I am possibly in the running for a date with the witty Office Inbetweener (click here for your chance to win). It’s been an eventful year. Let’s hope it is the first of many, I certainly didn’t think I would last as long as I have.

So never mind following the yellow brick road this Christmas,  follow me!

The Voice of the Weekend!

thank-god-its-friday

Pre accident, I was never a fan of ‘the weekend’, in fact all those cheery voices saying ‘Thank feck it’s Friday’ would drive me absolutely banana’s. The reason, well I worked a part time job, so there really wasn’t a weekend to get excited about. Post accident me however, is a whole different ball game, come 5 o’clock and I am jumping up and down and clapping like a seal. I have morphed into the very object of one of my own pet hates!

Sometimes I miss my part time job, but at the moment leg recovery and the situation at home are the main things stopping me from returning, that and I don’t miss the stress one little bit.

I’ve worked as a phone operator for taxi firms since I was 18 years of age. I’ve had 3 marriage proposals, all from drunk men might I add, countless offers of meaningless sex, date requests, flowers, oh and I’ve been threatened twice.

A vast majority of the town in which I live know me, or at least know of me, however only a small handful of them would be able to pick me out in an identity parade, due to the fact they have never actually seen me. They are, for all intents and purposes in love with the voice on the other end of the phone. The funniest thing of all has to be when you are in a bar and realise the group of guys standing beside you are actually discussing you, remarking on what a hot voice you have…..I tend to find things like that quite embarrassing because I personally can’t see the attraction. It’s fun though when they ring the next week and you casually ask them to stop discussing you in public and they are gutted beyond belief that you did not introduce yourself. You can never make them understand that the real life version does not match up to the ‘Jessica Rabbit’ version they have in their heads.

There is no doubt though, that the Irish accent does have it’s advantages, take this simple call with one of BT’s foreign offices for example:

Me: Hi, I have a problem with my modem.

BT Staff member (female might I add): And what seems to be the problem?

Me: It keeps turning itself off.

BT Staff member: M’aam may I ask you a question?

Me: Sure, what is it?

BT Staff Member: Are you a jockey disc?

Me: A what?

Bt Staff Member: A jockey disc.

Me: I’m sorry I don’t know what that is?

BT Staff Member: On the radio, a person on the radio.

Me: Ohh a Disc Jockey (I’m laughing at this point and so is she), no I’m not a jockey disc.

BT Staff Member: Well M’aam I hope you don’t mind me telling you but you have a nice voice, a voice for radio.

Me: Mumbles something incoherent to hide embarrassment.

BT Staff Member: I’ll send you a new modem and it won’t cost you a penny.

Me: Ummm thanks very much, you have a nice day I say as I hang up the phone, bemused and confused but getting a new modem!

By far however the strangest request I have ever had, and believe me there have been many, was a gentleman one night asking me had I ever though about branching out on my phone operator career. What do you mean I asked all ears, thinking he was opening a new firm and trying to poach me. When he told me I had the perfect voice to be a phone sex line operator, there was a stunned silence from my end of the phone. Sensing I was not too keen on his idea, he proceeded to tell me it paid £10 an hour, which in those days was really good money. At that point I might have given a small ‘Hmm’, and seizing what he perceived to be an opening he continued by telling me I would be able to work from home….wait….WHAT!!?? I had a quick mind flash of how this would pan out:

“Oh yes baby, it’s getting really hot and steamy now.”  – He doesn’t need to know I am doing the ironing.

“Mmmm honey that’s right, my lust is boiling over, oh actually wait, I’ll brb it’s the feckin spuds.”

I started to laugh at that point and told him I didn’t think that I was suited for the job, but thanked him for considering me.

So if you need anyone cajoled or you want to bargain with someone, I’m your woman, for a small fee I’ll ring them up and mesmerize them with my ‘allegedly” magic voice! I wouldn’t get too excited about it working though, because I am pretty sure that beer not only affects the goggles but hearing as well and in sober reality my voice is decidedly average!

I’m half left!

if_stress_burned_calories

Everyone has off days, of course they do. It’s like that old joke when someone asks you if you are alright, and you reply, no I’m half left because if I was all right I’d fall over.

My day was actually fine, the problems started when I got home. Sometimes I just want to go to my room, close the door, climb under the duvet and hide, however the insistent knocking on the door, followed by ‘it’s me again’ makes me want to bang my head repeatedly against the wall instead.

Christmas Card gate is a disaster! My Father remarked he was amazed that I had remained so calm. I didn’t say a word, in fact I kept my mouth tightly shut, because I was scared that if I opened it the shattered remains of my teeth would spill onto the floor. What can I say, in times of great stress I clench and grind!

I’m only beginning to realise how stressful it is to look after a person with a mental illness, and how time consuming it is. It’s also extremely sad to watch someone who you know was a smart, articulate and outgoing individual disappear in front of your very eyes, while trying to convince them that you are not the enemy.

It’s also very hard to remain calm. I think I am getting better, I am certainly trying to. Sometimes it’s just better to walk away, perhaps shed a few tears, have a think and then approach the problem from a different angle. But there is the guilt, always the worry and the guilt.

I fight it a lot. I fight with my own feelings. I didn’t ask for this, but then I guess neither did she. I don’t think I can do it, and then I realise that I have been and I am amazed at the way I have stepped up to the plate and can now sort out tomorrow nights dinner as I cook tonight’s. Simple things I know, but I was used to cooking for one, not running a house for three.

I miss my free time though. I miss being able to ring Udders and say lets go for tea. These days there would have to be a 20 step, 3 day multi action plan before I could consider it. Although the other week I did show my Dad how to fry left over potatoes, so there is progress.

It’s all part of life though isn’t it and these things have to run their course, but sometimes you just need to let off a little steam.

No one said I was always going to be smiley and happy, I am after all half left.

P.s I made a New Year’s resolution I was going to write everything, not just the good stuff on this blog. So just in case the Zombie apocalypse comes before I make it to 2014 I’ve started early!
