At some point I am going to have to make the conscious decision to sell all my CD’s. I no longer have a stereo in my room, it had to be removed to make room for the Xbox One. Something new comes in, something old goes out.
When I started work 23 years ago, my Kenwood stacking system was the first thing I bought with my very first monthly wage packet. Since then it has served me faithfully and been with me through every heartbreak, happiness and general hassle. It’s played the CD’s that have provided the soundtrack for my life so far.
Life however has moved on and technology has evolved. I would never have guessed then that I would one day carry in my pocket a little machine that could house my entire music collection, never mind shuffle it at the touch of a button.
I’ve been wracking my brains to try and remember what the very first CD I bought was and I am not 100% sure, but I believe it might have been a little 3″ effort containing Love in an Elevator by Aerosmith. More than likely I had no money left after purchasing the stereo.
Over the years I have amassed quite a collection of CD’s, which for the last couple of years since I purchased an Ipod have been gathering dust. It’s time to consider passing them on to someone who actually wants them, but somehow it feels like you are giving away little pieces of your memory, little pieces of a life lived. While they are not gone forever, because they can be imported to digital, they are no longer there to look at, open and peruse. At the end of the day though does that really matter, as long as I can listen to the music.
What started this train of thought, well the need for extra shelf space and the importation of the amazing album ‘Graceland’ by Paul Simon. I was bopping through every word of this post! Enjoy :)
The Indecisive Eejit 
Ah, yes…..the inevitable upgrades……A few years ago, I took all my VHS up to DVD and now I’m finding I don’t even need these DVDs. But as you said, they’re all little pieces of our memories and how hard it is to let them go. Am thinking I’m just going to hang onto mine for the moment…soon enough I won’t be able to buy a DVD player anymore and then I won’t have a choice! :0 Just wish I would’ve known before I bought 3 expensive media chests to house all this outdated media!

True but it is nice to have something physical to look at. Compared to my CD collection, my Dvd one is really small, in fact i couldn’t tell you the last time I bought one and if it wasn’t for the Xbox i wouldn’t be able to play them lol

I’ve contemplated doing the same. I still have a stereo, a Sony that will hold 60 discs in a carousel, but I rarely bother turning it on. Everything I want to listen to is available via Google Play on my laptop and on the various computers I use at work. I could certainly make better use of the space currently occupied by both the stereo and the bookshelf that houses the CDs, not to mention the large speakers. Honestly, I’m just a little paranoid about eliminating the CDs on the off chance that I lose the digital backups somehow. Silly, really.

My speakers were part of the problem, they were huge and taking up two shelf space in my tall skinny cabinet. I was actually able to sort my Dvd’s and put a few pictures in there

Don’t do it, I beg you! I did his a while back and have regretted it ever since; mine were in a box for so long, but I still miss them and look for CDs I no longer have. Plus the sound quality is incomparably better. Save them for when you get rich and have a massive house which you need to fill! :)

Lol I’m not sure that’s going yo happy anytime soon. I know what you mean though, its hard letting go. I have a few key ones and really old ones that I think would stay. I’ll sort them into a pile and get right of the ‘not really bothered’ one first lol

I feel your pain on this one. I have drawers of old CD’s, and they ARE the soundtrack to my life. Now, I won’t mention that I don’t own a CD player or am likely to break any of these out, but it seems like they should just STAY as long as they are not too much in the way. I have turned into a radio listener and a You-Tube’er, if there is something particular I want to listen to.

I like Youtube now too, it’s a good way to find out if you like all the songs enough to purchase an album. I think there would be a few I will never part with, but there are some I purchased on the cheap and didn’t like when I listened to them, they will have to go lol

I was gonna say your xbox can play CDs… but if you have them all digital… might as well give them a home somewhere else. That’s just my opinion. That was a fun song!

Throw out your CDs? Have you gone mad? What happens if after you’ve thrown out all your CDs you bump into Adam Ant in the street and he comes back for a nice cup of tea and slice of cake and then asks to see all his CDs for him to sign? You won’t have them! That’s what! It’s at this point the seventh seal will break and the zombie apocalypse will be upon us and the end of civilisation as we know it. Of course, it’s entirely up to you at the end of the day, but if you’re happy with that eventuality, then fire away by all means, throw out your CDs if you want. See if I care (sound of rattle being thrown out of pram. Followed by sob, sob, hiccup burp).

Lol Oh i so love it when you’re being a drama queen. If Adam Ant comes by for tea it’s even worse, I’ll have to drag out the vinyl, so total avoidance of the zombie apocalypse, for now anyway lol Beside i’m all talk no action aka lazy at things like that.

Love it! Graceland is one of my favourite albums of all time, and man, it is so hard to get rid of all my CDs. Haven’t managed it yet, but they are all put away in boxes, at least. Sigh.

A lot of mine I will never listen to again, but there are some it will be really hard to part with…..I must be strong and resolute in my task lol

I got to this really late, but I’m just getting back into the blogosphere now (just posted yesterday actually :D).
All my music is on Spotify, so I don’t have to deal with these problems, but I can get the emotional connection you have to your CDs. I’d say keep them for nostalgic purposes, but it’s your choice. :)
